"All I can think about is what an amazing experience I had in Peru... I would do anything to be trekking the Andes mountains with the greatest group there was. @operationgroundswell pushed me out of my comfort zone and I'm so glad I did." #operationgroundswell #backpacktivism 📷: @lindsayjakewayy

Throwback to our Marketing Director's backpacking adventures through Central America! Justine has consciously worked to ensure the images we use in our marketing show diversity as much as possible. She knows how important it is to be able to imagine yourself in an experience, and that a huge part of that imagining comes in being able to see it through images and stories, through role models, and through the media. We have a responsibility in the stories we tell, and representation matters. #operationgroundswell #backpacktivism 📷: @justineabigail

It’s not #TBT but my friends @oneikatraveller + @anubhamomin inspire me to be proud of being a woman of colour who travels boldly, who hikes in the pouring rain to sit on the edge of an active volcano . These badasses worked together on a @vicecanada video to talk about the power of representation and diversity in travel media. In the video, Oneika talks about how white the travel media space is and how deeply that affects our perceptions of who travels . I’ve been working in the travel industry for awhile now through @operationgroundswell and it's not a secret that the majority of people who go on our trips are white. I always tell the story of how for years, I would intentionally put my travel photos on our website - not for vanity purposes - but to represent, to show that Asians backpack and go on rugged adventures too . Why? Because I know how important it is to be able to imagine yourself in an experience, in an opportunity. And a huge part of that imagining comes in being able to see it through images and stories, through role models, through the media . Thankfully, I don't have to do that any more because over the years, we've had a lot more people of diverse ethnic backgrounds join us around the globe (in no small part thanks to travel bloggers of colour like Oneika and Anubha ). And as that's happened, you bet I've been putting their faces front and centre of our promotional materials (with consent, obvs ) . I love working in marketing for this very reason. I don't take lightly the power I have to make decisions on the images and language we use to promote our travel experiences. And I'm really grateful I work with an org that urges me to think critically about these issues and advocates not just for representation in our marketing materials, but for real diversity on our programs abroad. . So to all my friends - white + BIPOC - don't ever forget that we're out here traveling the world, getting our adventure on, and doing our thing! 🌏🎒✈️

I remember coming to Jasper since I was a very little kid on camping trips with the family, every time I come back it's extreme nostalgia. Very thankful I got back here and experienced this moment. Jasper is a beautiful national park in western Alberta where the plains hit the Rocky Mountains. From the beautiful rugged mountains, to the turquoise lakes, it's quite the magical place. I wish the best for all national parks, the deserve the upmost respect and protection. Have you ever been to Jasper, if so what's you're favorite thing here?
Another day, another adventure.. it's amazing how all around the world there are so many people celebrating the passing of going into the New Years Do you realize we just traveled 584 miles since last December 31st?! Holy shit!! Wishing the most enlightened next 584 miles of space travel to everyone, let's send it!! 🌞👽
"Back in Santiago, Guatemala. I loved learning about the elaborate process that goes into creating each woven piece. From spinning the thread to using these massive looms to weave it. Each piece contains deep and beautiful meaning. A huge thanks to Diego and his family for welcoming us to their home and teaching us about weaving and embroidery." #operationgroundswell #backpacktivism 📷: @sammedakovic

So excited to get back up to Canada for the holidays, every time I cross the border back into this amazing country it feels so special! This spot, Athabasca falls has got to be in my top 5 places on earth. Just look at what the universe created here, absolutely astonishing ❤️❤️
"Missing my India crew. Wish we were back adventuring through the Himalayas, listening to the wisdoms of monks, eating Nutella with everything, and laying on rooftops looking at the unending amount of stars. A lifetimes worth of wonderful memories in my 40 day summer adventure." #operationgroundswell #backpacktivism 📷: @joelleisgrande
Hands down the best experience of my #2017cruise on @royalcaribbean "Independence Of The Seas" ship was going out onto the very front of the ship at night (with a 🍺 ) and looking at our amazing night sky! You are literally in the middle of the Gulf Of Mexico, in the ocean, on a floating city. Mind = Blown I am soooo excited to show you guys my video of the cruise to Cozumel & Costa Maya! Imagine this very photo, but in a time lapse! Coming soon😎
A local man who was selling sea shells reads the Quintana Roo newspaper with the headline "Ejecutado" or in English "Executed" We all have our ways of trying to understand what happens in the world, I wonder if this man prefers the paper over social media? I would guess so, and to me that is awesome.
Beautiful spot in Cozumel looking out at the beast of a ship "Independence Of The Seas" I was going around the island, shooting everything that caught my eye, and I barley missed this view, I just had to lift myself over this fence to get the perfect angle! Royal Caribbean cruises absolutely did amazing from the hospitality on the ship, to bringing us to the most amazing spots, I can't wait to cruise with them again!
Exploring Old Dhaka - the Buriganga River is one of the most polluted in Bangladesh due to dumping from the neighbouring factories. Environmentalists are calling for strict laws to prevent abuse of waterways. #operationgroundswell #backpacktivism 📷: @ejc______
Standing on this sketchy dock in Costa Maya, thinking about how lucky this place is that it's nothing like America. Locals cutting up fish on the beach to sell at the market, the leather craftsman making his rounds on the beach selling to tourists, and the people cutting up coconuts and selling them on the spot. This is what I love about Mexico, this is true living🌊
A hidden gem on the Costa Maya island, this palm tree that was overhanging the ocean was picture perfect! I met a lot of inspiring people on this island (mostly kids ) that live here. When you live on an island with only 2000 people your way of life is very very different than how it is on mainland. But this island life.. could be the life for me 🌴
#GIVEAWAY FOR #GIVINGTUESDAY !! I'm proud to be working with @kiva org for my first giveaway! Kiva is the largest crowdfunding platform for social good - giving you the chance to make a loan (not a donation! ) to people in more than 80 countries so they can start businesses, go to school, and improve life for their families. . It's one of the better models of social good as it recognizes the agency of individuals, instead of creating dependency through charity. . To celebrate #GivingTuesday , I want you to start loaning! I'm gifting one of you with a $25 Kiva card to make your first loan and two more cards to share with any of your friends. What do you have to do? 1. Follow me and @kiva org 2. Tag two friends in the comments who you want to gift a Kiva card to 3. Like this post! . That’s it! I’ll announce the winner on December 1st and send you those cards so you can start lending ASAP! . So wassup with this pic? This photo was taken in San Miguel Escobar, Guatemala with the Camargo family after Lesbia (red shirt ) and Armando (blue shirt ) showed me the intricacies of their livelihood as coffee farmers of a direct trade cooperative (s/o @delagente ). I wanted to share this photo today because they're just one example of the many incredible people who are changing their lives and their local communities on their own terms. . I've been lucky enough to meet many such change makers on my own travels and work with @operationgroundswell , while getting to know many more through the loans I've made on @Kiva over the years. It's time we shift the narrative from how we can "help" and instead, stand in solidarity and make space for the many people who are already helping themselves. . So if you really want to make an impact on #GivingTuesday or any day really, make a loan on Kiva! And if you want to talk more about solidarity vs. charity...well, you know where to find me.
I was running around the island (Costa Maya ) and I was cutting it close to get back on my cruise ship before it departed. About to get a taxi then I saw this shot, I immediately tossed my bag down and ran into the water to get a little closer to these birds because I thought they would be gone in seconds. About 1 minute into shooting this, I realized my phone was in my pocket, a bag of rice later I realized this photo cost me $600 but I think it might have been worth it
Not all who wander are lost... just kidding we were definitely lost (thank god for guides ). Seriously missing Cambodia and my OG fam and constantly sweating but the view was worth it. . . . . #backpacktivism #operationgroundswell #SEAAnimalConservation #travel #backpacking #forest #trees #takemeback #itscoldhere
I was so lucky to be able to see these guys do the dying Mexican ritual called "Danza de los Voladores" Five of them climb a 30 meter pole, tie themselves to a rope and then wind up the ropes, then they unwind it by letting themselves hang until they reach the bottom. The guy in the middle is holding up a small scale version of the pole. One of the best $10 dollars I ever spent was to these hard working guys to see the ritual!
